Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement

What kind of rotator cuff injury requires more than rehab and injections?Reverse total shoulder replacement is different from the procedure most often performed, conventional shoulder replacement. While conventional surgery can successfully address shoulder arthritis problems, the reverse total should replacement is often a better choice for people who have tears in the rotator cuff, often referred to as “cuff tear arthropathy.” With this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision on the top or front of the shoulder, removes the damaged bone and replaces it with a cup of surgical plastic and a metal ball. What make this procedure “reverse” is that is uses different muscles, not the rotator cuff muscles, to make the shoulder work. This is performed as an inpatient procedure. Full recovery time is generally six weeks.
