As in any other joint, the finger’s joint can suffer arthritis as well. If nonsurgical treatments are not successful in easing your pain and loss of function, a hand surgeon may recommend arthroplasty, a procedure that replaces the surfaces of the joint. Different types of prosthesis have been designed. Some are surgical plastic and metal, and others are made of silicone. Depending on the joint involved and type of arthritis, the surgery and prosthesis may vary. Recovery involves specialized hand therapy for several months.
